It’s a great time of year for haunted reads. Let’s start with a couple excellent reads for those who enjoyed When We Were Liars, by Lockhart, 2014.
The Unfortunates, by Kim Liggett, 2018.
Grant, a wealthy senator’s son finds himself off the hook for a drunk driving accident that kills four other teens. Grant deeply regrets his role in the accident, and his family’s apparent unwillingness to let him take responsibility for the crime. In a state of complete despair, Grant determines to commit suicide during an upcoming caving expedition. As he prepares to enter the cave and end his life, the cave collapses and he finds himself wanting to survive. In his attempt to live, he bonds with four other teens, also trapped during the collapse. The teens together as a team to overcome intense physically and mental challenges, but as they begin to see light, they realize something mysterious and deadly is also with them in the dark.
See All the Stars, by Kit Frick, 2018.

Chapters alternate between Elloy’s Sophomore, Junior, and Senior year. It’s quickly apparent that something traumatic has occurred, something which ripped four best friends apart, and which no one wants to speak about. The action starts as Senior year begins and Ellroy is returning to school, following an extended suspension. Though she isn’t immediately welcomed back by her former friends, or any classmates, eventually, Ret, the apparent leader of the former friend group attempts to reestablish a bond with Ellory. Unfortunately, Ret may be the one friend Ellory doesn’t need as she seems surrounded by chaos and drama. Through flashbacks, the betrayal which tore apart the friends slowly exposed, and the event which changed their lives revealed in a dramatic conclusion.
